BRANDON, Florida -- Hillsborough County sheriff's detectives are investigating a triple shooting at the Boomerang Martini Bar located at 2016 Town Center Boulevard in Brandon.
Investigators say a fight broke out, possibly over a woman's lost purse, as the bar closed around 3 a.m. The argument spilled into the parking lot where the woman's boyfriend, 28-year-old Louis Kuilan-Maysonet, reportedly started arguing with another man, 29-year-old Christopher Gonzalez-Cartagena.
Kuilan-Maysonet allegedly lifted his shirt and flashed a handgun in his waistband while Gonzalez-Cartagena was walking to his car. As he neared his car, investigators say Kuilan-Maysonet started shooting at him.
Gonzalez-Cartagena suffered several gunshot wounds, including a graze to the head.
During the shooting, the sheriff's office says a Boomerang's bodyguard, Andre Jennings, was directing traffic. When he heard the gunshots, he turned and witnessed the shooting, then ordered Kuilan-Maysonet to stop. Kuilan-Maysonet spun around with the gun in his hands, and that's when investigators say Jennings shot and killed him.
"Because this armed security guard was in fear for his life and the lives of others, he shot the man," says Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Samara Sodos.
Another person at the bar who was uninvolved in the fight was also shot in the leg, although investigators say it's unclear who shot him. He and Gonzalez-Cartagena were both taken to the hospital for treatment.
The sheriff's office says Jennings is fully licensed with a valid concealed weapons permit.
No charges have been filed, but the sheriff's office is still working with the State Attorney's Office to determine whether any will be filed.
According to Sodos, Boomerang has had a "high number of calls" for service, including 25 this year so far. Five of them were for assault and battery.
