USF Bulls women's basketball Coach Jose Fernandez hugs Senior Andrea Smith following his 200th win on Monday.
Tampa, Florida -- After 13 years as the head coach at USF, Jose Fernandez reached an incredible milestone on Monday.
His Bulls women's basketball team beat Detroit, 74-60 to earn Fernandez his 200th career head coaching victory.
"I'm thankful," he said after the win. "I was here when we shared offices with softball, volleyball and women's tennis. When I took over in 2000, this was one of the worst programs in the country."
In his first year, USF won just four games. In his second season, the Bulls won just three more. Since then, Fernandez has helped USF grow to one of the respected teams in the nation.
"It starts with the type of kids that we have and what we've done," he said.
USF now opens Big East play against Notre Dame on Tuesday, Jan. 8.
