Brooksville, Florida-- A dead man found in a wooded area has been positively identified as "missing, endangered" man, Brian Gilley, Hernando deputies said in an initial report Tuesday.
According to reports, Gilley, 21, was reported missing and believed to be a danger to himself on January 18, 2013.
Almost two months later, on Wednesday, March 13, deputies received reports of a body found in a wooded area near Cortez Blvd. and Sunshine Grove Rd., and those on scene said it appeared the person had taken their life.
Deputies then received confirmation from the Medical Examiner's Office on Tuesday that those remains belonged to Gilley.
...And it seemed the case could be coming to a close, until a report sent after 6 p.m. Tuesday said deputies received word of more human remains found in the same area.
Deputies who responded to the scene confirmed that a human forearm and hand were located, and have since said the new discovery is "very concerning."
The Medical Examiner's Office will evaluate the bones for identification purposes, and in the meantime, Sheriff Nienhuis has Chief Deputy Maurer conducting a thorough investigation of this "apparent oversight", explained the latest report.
It is unknown at this time if the additional remains belong to Gilley.
The report said they will look into "where the checks and balances between the Sheriff's Office and the Medical Examiner's Office failed", since both had investigators at the original scene on March 13.
