Winter Haven, Florida -- A man's birthday may end with him in jail if Winter Haven Police are able to find him. Police have issued a warrant for the arrest of just-turned 22-year-old Damarius Matthews for robbing an off-duty deputy on the evening of May 18.
Police say around 6:55 p.m., Polk County Sheriff's Deputy Regina Hulverson was walking into the Publix in the 800 block of Cypress Gardens Boulevard when Matthews came up and snatched her purse which contained her department-issued badge and credentials along with her gun that was secured in a holster.
He was then seen getting in to a rented 2013 silver Mazda and heading south on 8th St. SE. It has since been located and impounded.
Matthews is wanted for Robbery, Grand Theft of Firearm, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon and Petit Theft.
Winter Haven Police say Matthews has a criminal history dating back to 2006 and is currently a convicted felon. He is considered armed and extremely dangerous.
