LAKELAND, Florida -- The Polk County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of a 71-year-old man at the Tenoroc Mine Shooting Range in Lakeland.
Investigators say Larry Simpson died of a single gunshot wound to the upper torso while he was shooting clays with a friend, Dr. Jaime Gonzalez of Orlando, at around 9:30 a.m. Sunday.
Gonzalez told deputies Simpson was operating the remote control for the clay machine. Gonzalez said he heard a shot directly behind him and turned around to find Simpson had a gunshot wound. Simpson's shotgun was laying beside him.
Simpson died at the scene. Sheriff's Office spokesman Scott Wilder says detectives did not know how Simpson was shot
The medical examiner's office will perform an autopsy on Monday.
