Polk County, Florida -- Traffic deputies have released the details of a fatal crash in Bartow that shut down part of 80 Foot Road for nearly five hours Friday.
According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, 29-year-old Amanda Hughes of Bartow was driving her burgundy Nissan Altima north along 80 Foot Road around 2:15 p.m. Witnesses said she was speeding when she swerved, over-corrected and began to fishtail.
At the same time, 60-year-old Pedro Hernandez of Bowling Green was driving his Chevy Silverado truck -with a trailer in tow- southbound on the same road.
As Hughes continued to fishtail, her car turned sideways and crossed into Hernandez's path. Hernandez reportedly tried to brake and avoid hitting her car, but he ended up striking the passenger side of her Altima with great force.
Officials said the impact was so strong, the passenger's-side doors were touching the interior of the driver's-side doors.
Hughes and her six-month-old baby, who was in a rear-facing car seat, were pronounced dead at the scene. Hughes was reportedly not wearing her seat belt.
Hernandez and his passenger, 55-year-old Vernada Castillo, received minor injuries in the crash. They were taken by ambulance to Bartow Memorial Hospital and have since been released.
Deputies said Hughes' driver's license was suspended, and that speed appears to be a factor in the crash.
