Key West, Florida - The City Commission in Key West will vote Tuesday on whether to allow tattoo shops in the city for the first time since they were outlawed 40 years ago.
The proposed ordinance would allow tattoo shops on the main tourist strip of Duval Street, and establishes an annual fee of $2,500 for each shop.
The possible law change comes as Key West faces a lawsuit from the owners of Key West Ink. That shop offers bodypainting, henna and temporary tattoos, but they want to offer permanent tattoos too.
The city banned tattoo shops four decades ago at the request of Navy officials, who didn't want sailors getting body art. Tuesday's vote would be the first of two needed to pass the ordinance.
