Miami, Florida - Life is getting back to normal in Miami, after rumors about Fidel Castro swept through South Florida Friday, causing anticipation and tension in some Cuban communities.

The rumor was that Fidel Castro had died, and an official announcement would be made at any minute. The official word in Cuba is that Castro is very much alive.

Rumors of his death are a staple in the heavily Cuban-exile city. Their frequency has intensified in recent days, after his birthday came and went with neither pictures, letters or recordings from him.

Rumors intensified friday, because of a meeting of local officials to review their plans for the day when castro really does die.

Miami's police chief says there is reason to believe something is going on with Castro.

Chief John Timoney said, "Two nights ago, the head of the FBI called me, at about 11 o clock at night at said the chatter is stronger and more frequent then usual, so, there is something there."

Republican Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen said, "Everyone is wondering what the news is, and the news is, there is no news. and so we wait."

81-year-old Fidel Castro ceded most of his power to his brother, Raul, last year. Cuban officials insist he still has an active role in running cuba.
