Clearwater, Florida - The premier baristas throughout the Southeastern United States are putting their coffee preparation skills to the test during the Specialty Coffee Association of America's (SCAA) 2007 Southeast Regional Barista Competition, at the Harborview Center in Clearwater.
"It's like the Iron Chef of coffee," says Lena Abed from Chapel Hill.
Competitors are judged on station cleanliness, taste, beverage presentation, technical skills and total impression.
The event includes the most skilled and accomplished baristas from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia
"There is a lot of artistry and skill that goes into making an espresso-based drink and a lot of people don't know that," says Abed.
The winner goes on to the national competition in Minnesota with an opportunity to represent the U.S. in world competition in Denmark.
