Venice, Florida -- A 5-year-old Sarasota County boy is recovering at home today after his stepfather, a police officer, accidentally shot him. The incident happened at the Venice Police gun range Wednesday night.
Investigators say Venice Police Officer Billy Masters was cleaning his Glock 9mm Handgun and didn't realize there was still a round left in the chamber.
Masters discharged the weapon and the bullet his stepson in the hip. Emergency crews flew the injured child to All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg where he spent the night and was released.
