Miami, Florida- The National Hurricane Center is tracking a system in the Atlantic that is rapidly moving westward. The latest observations show the system still hasn't developed a closed circulation but forecast models suggest it could within a couple of days.
The area of showers and thunderstorms is associated with a sharp surface trough and large upper-level low pressure system. It's currently located 425 miles east-northeast of Puerto Rico and is moving westward at 15 to 20 mph. Water temperatures are still warm enough in this area to support tropical cyclone formation.
Interests in the Northern Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Hispaniola and the Eastern Bahamas should monitor the progress of the system as well as the southeastern U.S.
