APOLLO BEACH, Fla. (AP) — This week's cold snap drove at least 100 manatees into canals near a Tampa Bay area power plant.
Tampa Electric Company's power plant in Apollo Beach discharges warm water into the canals, heating them to around 75 degrees. The result is a 30-acre sauna for manatees.
The endangered marine mammals prefer warm water. Water temperatures outside the canals in Hillsborough Bay had dropped to about 55 degrees — too chilly for manatees.
TECO has expanded its manatee viewing center to accommodate the many visitors looking for manatees. The plant is a popular spot for manatees seeking warmth.
