St. Petersburg, FL -- Big Brothers, Big Sisters has been helping kids for many years to have mentors in their community. Six months ago, the organization teamed up with former Tampa Bay Buccaneer Mike Alstott to create the Sports Buddies program. When it started, 1,000 boys needed a big brother, and over the past few months, they've been able to match 200. During todays Sports Buddies Day at Tropicana Field, they hoped to recruit more men to get involved. "The need is huge," says Lara Shane, Executive Vice President for Big Brothers Big Sisters. "As we continue to get the word out about sports buddies, we tend to have as many little boys or their mothers calling looking for their children to get involved. Today's about having fun and letting the sports buddies get together and enjoy themselves with Mike and the foundation and we've very appreciative." Independent studies show children who have a big brother or big sister are more likely to move up to the next grade level and less likely to end up in the juvenile justice system.
