St. Petersburg, Florida--Years ago, Bonita Shamp came up with an idea that seemed to suit her active lifestyle: a design for a scarf that was easy to tie and stylish to wear.
It wasn't until she was diagnosed with breast cancer that Shamp realized many other women could benefit from her creation--giving them a sense of security and fashion while they're dealing with the effects of chemotherapy.
About a year ago, Shamp applied for a patent for her "Abonita Scarf." She describes it as a four-in-one head scarf that's perfect for those who may have lost their hair because of cancer treatment.
"You know you're going to lose it," said Shamp--referring to cancer patients' hair loss. "But you have no idea until it happens--when it starts coming out by the handfull. It's the worst feeling. So I wanted the woman going through cancer and hair loss to feel fashionable."
The Abonita Scarf is simple to wear. There's no tying involved--simply place the scarf over your head, pull the headband through a ring and snap the headband in place. Shamp came up with four different ways to wear the scarves to fit any fashion need.
The scarves come in 16 different prints. Prices run from $23-$25. You can buy the scarves at the Abonita Scarf website.
In December, it will be five years since Shamp received her cancer diagnosis. Since then, she's been cancer free but still wears her Abonita scarves because she loves the way they look.
