Parrish, Florida - A day of boating ended with a 20 year old man shot in the buttocks. David Mays was with a group of friends on the peninsula directly south of the Ft. Hamer boat ramp in Parrish.
Manatee County sheriff's deputies say there was a second group of people on the same peninsula who set up a camp about 100 yards to the east of Mays and his friends.
Both groups had a couple of people on the water. Mays and his friends were in a motorized boat and the other group was using a canoe.
Deputies say Mays' and his friends drove by the canoe and caused a large wave that turned it over. No one was injured. Deputies are trying to figure out if Mays' and his friends did it intentionally or not.
Never-the-less, the people in the canoe were not happy and deputies say someone pulled out a gun and started shooting.
That's when deputies say Mays was struck in the buttocks by one round.
EMS was already at the boat ramp for an unrelated medical call when Mays was brought over to them.
The paramedics drove Mays to the hospital for his buttock wound.
Deputies say the actual shooter could not be identified. K9 was on scene and conducted an area search of the beach and woods and could not locate any guns.
Mays' injury is not life threatening and at the time of this release he was having further tests done to see what kind of projectile was lodged in his buttocks.
