State Farm Hearing

Tallahassee, Florida -- State Farm Insurance pleaded its case and now it's up to a judge to decide whether the insurance giant proved they have enough evidence that justifies higher homeowner insurance rates.

Florida Division of Administrative Hearings (DOAH) Judge Manry heard arguments from State Farm and insurance regulators. State Farm called about a half dozen witnesses to the stand during this week's hearing while Florida's Office of Insurance Regulation called one.

State Farm's goal is to provide enough proof for an average 47% statewide rate hike. If approved, that means rates could go up 70% for policy holders in Pinellas County.

Judge Manry has 30 days to make a recommendation.

"That order is in Commissioner McCarty's possession, he then has 30 days to enter the final order," said OIR Director of Communications Ed Domansky. "If State Farm decides that they don't like the final order, they then can appeal to the First District Court of Appeals."

Until that ruling is decided, consumers shouldn't see any changes in their premium's price tag.

"The 9% rate reduction that went into effect in October of 2007 remains in effect until this matter is completely resolved.
