Fort Lauderdale, Florida -- It is being called the worst travel slump since the September 11th terrorist attacks, yet Celebrity Cruises is banking on its new $750 million Celebrity Solstice to draw people back to the cruising industry.
The 122,000 ton Solstice was christened this past week in Fort Lauderdale and features 10 different restaurants with room for more than 2,800 passengers.
"I love the ship. I can't say anything else. I love the ship and want to come back" Carolyn Spencer Brown, the editor in chief for Cruise Critic told 10 Connects.
Solstice features more than $6 million in artwork, includes a spa, casino, 18 different shops and boutiques, a theater for Broadway style shows and 85 percent of the staterooms have their own balcony.
One of the most popular attractions on board Solstice is The Lawn Club; a half acre of real grass that is carefully manicured and features areas for such activities as putting and croquette. The Lawn Club is also an area where passengers can simply walk around with their shoes off to feel the breeze in their hair and the grass between their toes. Eventually the area will also be used to host weddings and picnics.
The Hot Glass Show is another popular attraction on Celebrity Solstice. Run with the help of the Corning Museum of Glass, the Hot Glass Show educates passengers on the art of glassblowing.
Over the next six months the Solstice will cruise out of Fort Lauderdale before moving across the Atlantic for trips in Europe.
