Clermont, Florida -- The long arms of the law reached out to bring a baby girl into the world today on the shoulder of the Florida Turnpike.

A Trooper on patrol saw a minivan parked of the roadway north of Clermont and stopped to see if the driver needed assistance. The driver - a 31-year old woman - was having contractions and stopped when she realized her baby was coming, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

"At 5:09 p.m., the woman with the help of two Troopers and her mother delivered a healthy little girl," the FHP said. They were transported to Southlake Hospital by Lake Sumter EMS.

The names of the mother and child and the troopers who helped them were not available immediately.
