Tampa, Fla. - For the first time this holiday shopping season, the parking lots were finally packed on Tuesday. However, malls like International and WestShore were flooded with police officers long before the shoppers arrived.

"I think that a lot of people know that we're here. Some of the more undesirable people know that we're here in force, I think,"

said Cpl. Richard Blasioli, Tampa Police Department.

The Department is reporting less crime at the two malls this year.

"I think it's wonderful. I'm a terrified mom and I have the kids to my side, hold on to my belt, hold on to my belt," said Stephanie Rosario, a mother shopping with her two children.

"Makes you feel like Tampa PD is doing their job and security is doing their job, so it's always a good thing," said shopper Manny Hernandez.

Police admit that the number of shoppers crowding into the malls in the weeks leading up to Christmas has been down. However, they also believe that people who are shopping are paying attention to their surroundings.

"Just limit the number of valuables you leave in your car. Purses, don't leave them in there. Wallets, credit cards, cash," said Cpl. Richard Blasioli.

Shoppers seem to take notice.

"When you see women walking outside, they're looking around and I think people are being a little more cautious."

However, it's easy to get caught up in the shopping and forget about safety.

"Nobody wants to think of the negatives. Everybody's in that holiday mode, that holiday spirit."

So with a tough economy, you may be bummed out that you don't have much to spent this year. However, at least you know that whatever you spend, you're safe.

"It feels safe," said Hernandez.
