Suspect in Tampa woman's homicide arrested in Georgia

COBB COUNTY, Ga. -- The murder of a Tampa mother of three was arrested in Marietta Georgia on November 9, Tampa Police reported Monday.

Jovan Q. Huggins was arrested in connection with the shooting death of Latoya D. Smith, 30. Smith was found by officers suffering from a gunshot wound to the head at the 2100 block of West Flora Street on October 20.

Just after Smith was found, a car registered to her was involved in a hit and run crash near Cass Street and Willow Avenue. A man wearing black shorts and a red shirt was seen running from the crash scene.

Detectives determined that Huggins, who had recently began dating Smith, was with her just before the shooting. Witnesses also confirmed that Huggins was wearing the same clothes as the hit and run suspect.

Huggins, who had an active warrant for his arrest, was placed into custody by Cobb County deputies when they responded to a vagrancy call near a strip mall at 1275 Powers Ferry Road SE, in Marietta.

A TPD detective drove to Georgia to interview Huggins about the homicide case. The suspect is awaiting extradition back to Hillsborough County to face further charges in this incident.
