Tax Collector Mike Fasano: Don't renew tags for 2 years

Pasco County, Florida -- Pasco County Tax Collector Mike Fasano is encouraging vehicle owners who need to renew their car registrations within the next few months to only do so for one year.

Fasano says a bill, currently waiting for the governor's signature and would become effective on Sept. 1, 2014, would reduce auto tag renewal fees significantly for those who renew after that date. However, the bill specifically prohibits any vehicle owner who renewed their tag for a two-year period prior to the effective date of the bill from receiving a refund for the fees they paid when the reduction takes place.

"It is imperative that those who decide to renew their auto registration between now and the end of August strongly consider not renewing for two years," Mike Fasano says. "If you do, you will not be eligible to receive the benefits those who renew for one year starting September 1 will receive. The Florida Legislature has excluded the hundreds of thousands of people statewide who have, thus far, renewed for two years. That number will only grow daily unless we can help Florida vehicle owners understand how much money they will lose once this bill becomes law."

If you renew your registration within the next few months and do so for only one year, Fasano says you will be able to benefit from the reductions that go into effect in September.
