Teen in custody in fatal shooting in Clearwater

Clearwater, Florida -- A teenage suspect is in custody after a fatal shooting Thursday night where police were called to a home in the 1400 block of Hamlet Avenue, in the Belleair-Highlands subdivision.

The Clearwater Police Department says a 17-year-old is in a juvenile detention facility and could face first-degree murder charges in the case if the State Attorney's Office charges the youth as an adult.

Around 8 p.m., a patrol officer heard or saw a commotion or disturbance at that residence and found a man who had been shot inside the house. The suspected gunman fled the scene, but officers inundated the area and found him within an hour, about two blocks away.

The gun used in the shooting also was recovered. CPD said in a post on Twitter that the gun was stolen from an unlocked vehicle in Madeira Beach.

According to police, the victim and suspect had an argument when the verbal altercation turned violent and then deadly.

The victim was identified as Davtara Grayson, 37, of Tampa. He was not resident at the home, but the suspect was believed to be living there.
