Three charged in connection with robbery of elderly Tampa woman

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. -- An 83-year-old Tampa woman was allegedly beaten and robbed by two men at her home October 20 at the Bay West Club Mobile Home Park in Town 'N' Country.

Through the intervention of a maintenance worker, one of the suspects was caught at the scene. Two other suspects were located later that day by Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office deputies.

Thomas Neftali Mendez-Urbina, 30, Ricardo E. Marquez-Torres, 18, were charged in connection with the incident. A third man who was present in the suspects' vehicle, Lamar Jewell, 33, was also arrested for burglary and a prior warrant but not charged with battery of the woman.

According to the HCSO report, Mendez-Urbina and Marquez-Torres drove to the victim's residence on Kings Point Road and waited for the woman to leave. When she emerged, HCSO said that Marquez-Torres approached the woman and pushed her back inside the home.

Marquez-Torres then allegedly grabbed her by the hair and dragged her to a bedroom and assaulted her in the head with a metal object. He also threatened to kill the victim by saying "I'm gonna kill you." He then left the victim alone in a bedroom and removed a safe from a back bedroom.

As Marquez-Torres fled the scene, a maintenance worker intervened and tackled the suspect. Deputies arrived at the scene and placed the man under arrest.

Shortly thereafter, deputies canvassed the area looking for the suspects' vehicle and located it at a Circle K convenience store on Benjamin Road. Both Mendez-Urbina and Jewell were inside the car.

All three suspects were taken to Hillsborough County Jail.

The victim was treated for minor injuries. HCSO said that the safe and its contents were returned to her.
