Tip leads to arrest of serial bank robber

Tampa, Florida -- Thanks to a Crime Stoppers tip, a man police say was responsible for five bank robberies in Hillsborough County over the past year.

Investigators with multiple police agencies were able to determine the suspect identified in the tip, 29-year-old Matthew Maxwell, fit the profile of the person wanted in a series of robberies. That information was given to the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office who had two witnesses from a November 2013 robbery positively identify Maxwell from a photo line-up.

An arrest warrant was then issued for Maxwell on July 28 on the bank robbery charge. Information was obtained from a source that Maxwell was on vacation in Atlanta, Georgia and he was located and taken into custody there on July 30 by Atlanta law enforcement.

After his arrest, a large sum of money in a secret compartment, along with several other items of evidentiary value were found during a search of his Sulpher Springs home.

During an interview with investigators, Maxwell reportedly made a full confession to numerous bank robberies in the area.
