Victim in bus stabbing speaks out to 10 News

Tampa, Florida -- A veteran is recovering in the hospital tonight after being attacked on a public bus.

The two men responsible for the attack, Jorge and Alexander Alvarez, are now facing charges of aggravated battery.

The incident happened Monday around 5:00 p.m. near the Marion Street Bus Mall in Tampa. And although veteran Henry Richardson spent 20 years fighting for our country, he says the injuries he suffered Monday night are ones that he'll never forget.

"The doc said 'You lucky. They went a little more to the right you would've bled to death'," says Richardson.

Henry says two men hopped on the bus and started arguing with the bus driver. Then they started a commotion and that's when Richardson decided to jump in.

"I was trying to calm them down," says Richardson.

In the surveillance video, after Henry approached the men, they start to fight him and Richardson fought back.

"I had to do what I had to do," says Richarson.

He was stabbed twice.

"I have 19 stitches here and 26 here," says Richardson.

Now Henry wonders now if this attach could have been stopped.

"We have surveillance on all buses and are in constant contact with TPD," says Sandra Morrison with the Hillsborough Area Regional Transit. She says safety is their top priority.

When asked if there was something more they could be doing to make sure weapons aren't being brought onto the buses Morrison replied, "That's something we could look in to and look into the future. Like I said, safety's are top priority."

For Henry, he says he's happy the two men were caught and just hopes something like this doesn't happen again.

"I forgive you, but you have to pay for what you did," says Richardson.

Henry hopes to be released from the hospital in the next couple of days. As for HART buses, each bus has 6 surveillance cameras on board.

If you ever see something suspicious on a bus, make sure you call police.
