Mall employee ran over after trying to stop store theft

The Hillsborough County Sherff's Office says a man was ran over after trying to stop a store thief at the Brandon Town Center Mall.

The incident happened Tuesday just after 7:00 p.m.

Police say an unidentified man entered the Mirage Diamonds & Fine Jewelry store and stole two pieces of jewelry valued more than $23,000. 

After the man ran out of the store with the jewelry, the employee chased after him in the parking lot, where he jumped on the car and traveled on the vehicle's hood.

The employee was thrown off the vehicle near the intersection of Brandon Boulevard West and Brandon Towne Center Dr. 

The employee was transferred to Tampa General Hospital where he remains in critical condition.

The vehicle is described as a silver, newer Chevrolet Camaro and was last seen heading northbound on I-75.
