Man arrested after two-county chase

Units from several agencies assisted the Pasco County Sheriff's Office in apprehending a man who fled to Hillsborough County.

About 6:20 p.m. Friday, Tarpon Springs police identified John Byrne, 25, heading north on U.S. Highway 19. Police called Pasco deputies for assistance to stop the vehicle he was in.

When the vehicle was stopped near the intersection of Brinley Drive and Arelli Drive in New Port Richey, Byrned jumped out of the vehicle and fled into a swampy area near Veterans Village and Trinity West.

Fifteen units responded to the area, including Tarpon police, K9, and air units, to set up a perimeter.

Byrne stole an unoccupied minivan vehicle and tried to flee westbound down Lachlan Drive. A deputy fired at a tire, but Byrne continued down State Road 54 to the Suncoast and then into Hillsborough County, where he spun out into a ditch on Firecracker Drive. He was then taken into custody by Hillsborough deputies, and will be extradited to Pasco.

No one was injured during the chase.
