Conservative commentator Matt Drudge took some heat on social media Thursday for a tweet implying Hurricane Matthew is being hyped by the government to make a point about climate change, even as the deadly storm prepares to make landfall in Florida.
The deplorables are starting to wonder if govt has been lying to them about Hurricane Matthew intensity to make exaggerated point on climate— MATT DRUDGE (@DRUDGE) October 6, 2016
"The deplorables are starting to wonder if the govt has been lying to them about Hurricane Matthew intensity to make exaggerated point on climate," the editor of The Drudge Report tweeted.
The nation is starting to wonder if far-right media icons are going to make it through the 2016 campaign with their sanity intact…. https://t.co/evTA9Tftkr— Dylan Byers (@DylanByers) October 6, 2016
Several people on Twitter suggested Drudge consult with people living in Haiti, where at least 283 people died, about the intensity of the storm.
It's worth noting that Florida Gov. Rick Scott — who banned the state environmental protection agency from using the term climate change and who is no fan of big government — has not minced words about the danger posed by the storm.
"This storm will kill you," Scott said Thursday.
