Tampa, Florida - A little girl is OK after being hit by an orange thrown by a chimpanzee at Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo.

This incident happened during the zoo's "Presents for Primates" event. Zookeepers tossed wrapped presents filled with food in the chimps' and other primates' exhibits.

Angela Belcher, the assistant curator of primates at the zoo, says a chimp named Alex threw the orange in a fit of excitement.

"Alex didn't get his first gift, so he got super excited. And so the next thing he could get his hands on , he tossed," Belcher says.

The unidentified girl was hit in the head by the fruit. Belcher says the child was unhurt.

The Lowry Park Zoo says events like "Presents for Primates" are designed to encourage physical and mental activity of the apes and monkeys, while stimulating the animals' senses and behaviors.
