Murder Suspect: "I was upset, lashed out"

SAN ANTONIO. TEXAS - San Antonio police arrested 31-year-old Otis T. McKane in connection with the shooting death of Det. Benjamin Marconi.

On Monday night at a perp walk., several officers escorted McKane to a patrol car. He was dressed in a white t-shirt, black shorts and black tennis shoes. When several reporters asked McKane why he shot Merconi,  McKane said he was upset and wanted to see his son.

“I’ve been through several custody battles and I was upset at the situation that I was in and I lashed out at someone that didn’t deserve it,” McKane said.

When asked by reporters if McKane had anything to say to Merconi's family he said, “Sorry.”

Marconi was shot as as he sat in his vehicle after making a traffic stop. Authorities have McKane walked up to Marconi's driver's-side window and fired.
Marconi was writing a ticket for a motorist at the time. Investigators have said that driver was not connected to the shooter.
The investigation continues, and despite the arrest, McManus said that doesn't change the fact that there remain some who would target police officers with violence. Therefore, he said San Antonio officers remain "vigilant and on guard."
Marconi's family issued a statement Monday giving "thanks from the bottom of our hearts" for the outpouring of support after the officer's death.
Family members are asking for privacy to mourn.
