Great Story: Mailman saves life of toddler

GREER, SC (CNN) -- Mail delivery turned into a life saver for a South Carolina mom trying to save her baby from choking.

Eli Cooper, like most 11-month-olds. Is curious. He'll put just about anything into his mouth. Friday it was a plastic wrapper that got lodged in his throat. His mom Stephanie Cooper said, "I just turned him around and started beating him on his back, but it wasn't coming out."

His mom Stephanie says she was frantic and ran out the front door. She said, "I don't even remember a whole lot of it because I just blacked out."

There was her letter carrier Chris Brown, a 24-year veteran of the post office. Cooper said, "The mailman didn't even say a word. He just grabbed my son and did the Heimlich on him and out it came."

What?! Student reportedly suspended after saying 'Bless you'

Cooper fought back tears as she tried to explain her gratitude saying, "The baby started crying so I said 'He's okay mom. He's okay. He's crying. He's okay."

Brown says he learned how to do the Heimlich maneuver during emergency training with the post office years ago. Cooper said, "It was no coincidence that Chris was here at that exact time."

Eli's parents call brown their hero; a title Brown isn't comfortable with. Brown said, "I really don't feel that way because to me I would have done it for anyone or I hope someone would have done it for my children."

Cooper say it's because of Brown, the family will be able to celebrate Eli's first birthday this weekend. Cooper said, "It's an amazing, amazing story. It really is."

Brown says this was the first time in his 24 years with the post office that anything like this has happened.
