Helicopter crashes on roof of New Mexico hospital

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — A medical helicopter has crashed near the landing pad atop University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque.

Authorities say the pilot was being checked out Wednesday evening, but there were apparently no serious injuries. There were also two other crew members on board and no patients.

It's not immediately clear what caused the crash.

Images of the scene following the crash show the helicopter on its side with several firefighters on the roof and the area soaked with water.

The tail section of the helicopter was damaged and can be seen extending over the edge of the roof.

Officials say areas of the hospital that are directly below the landing pad were evacuated as a precaution.

University of New Mexico Hospital is the only top-level trauma center in New Mexico. It's unclear how long its helipad will be out of service.
