Huge dust storm covers Tucson area

A massive dust storm moved north into the Valley following storms in the Tucson area Friday afternoon.

The National Weather Service in Phoenix issued a dust-storm warning until 7 p.m. for the greater Phoenix metropolitan area.

Sky Harbor issued a temporary "ground stop" on inbound air traffic just after 6 p.m., meaning no new flights would be routed in from other airports till the ground stop was cleared. This affects departure times for flights heading to Phoenix, and because of connections here, outbound flights can be delayed as well.

The local utility was reporting over 3,000 customers without power by early evening. Check here for the latest.

For several hours , the Sky 12 helicopter was capturing video of a wall of dust beginning to cover parts of Casa Grande and moving north into the Valley.

Video from a news team just west of Casa Grande on Highway 84 showed extremely dark skies, rain, and lightning.

Officials advise anyone encountering blowing dust or blowing sand on the roadway to pull off the road as far as possible and put the vehicle in park. Turn the lights all the way off and keep your foot off the brake pedal.
