NFL wants artists to pay to play halftime show?

(WCNC) As the NFL narrows down the list of potential halftime show performers for Super Bowl 49, it appears the league wants recording artists to pay for the opportunity.

According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, the NFL has asked the representatives for Rihanna, Katy Perry and Coldplay if their clients would agree to contribute "a portion" of their post-Super Bowl tour income to the league as part of the deal for performing during the highly-coveted halftime show.

This so-called pay-to-play proposal received a cold response from the artists' reps.

A spokeswoman for the NFL said the league's contracts with performers are confidential, and their goal is "to put on the best show possible".
