Obama takes an afternoon stroll

(USA TODAY) -- Just another federal employee out for an afternoon stroll.

Well, not really.

A newly released White House video records people's surprise at encountering President Obama -- and his security detail -- as he walked from the White House to the Interior Department on Wednesday afternoon.

"Are you real?" one woman asked.

"Yes, I am," Obama replied. "I'm not wax!"

The White House-produced video shows Obama wishing someone a happy birthday, talking to a group of tourists about their trip, asking a food vendor "how's business?" and handing children "some special White House M&Ms."

Obama walked to and from the Interior Department for a signing ceremony designating a new public land monument in New Mexico.

At one point, the president approached a pool of reporters and said: "It's good to be out -- The Bear is loose!"
