ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Staff, faculty, and volunteers at Campbell Park Elementary held a fundraiser Friday to help out the family of a student who died nearly two weeks ago.
Ricardo Galloway drowned July 1 at Pass-a-Grille beach. He was 7-years-old.
On Rays game days, the school charges people $10 to park in their lot. The money goes toward supplies and other things for the school. School officials Friday dedicated all proceeds to Ricardo's family, who were there helping out with the fundraiser. The idea came after a friend contacted the school and said the family was in need.
"It means a lot to me. I would never have thought that people would come together to support me and my son and to remember him," said Ricardo's mother, Tranese Brookins.
According to police, Ricardo was found floating face down in the water. His mother said her son didn't know how to swim and believes he stepped into an area that suddenly got deeper.
School officials said they raised $1,171 for the family.
If you'd like to donate, you can still do so by mailing or dropping off a check at the school. The address is 1051 7th Avenue S.
