TORRANCE, CA - Toyota is launching two safety recalls in the U.S. involving some 752,000 2003 and 2004 Corollas and 270,000 Lexus IS vehicles from 2006 through early 2012.
The
automaker says the airbag control module for the supplemental restraint
system in the Corolla and Corolla Matrix cars could have integrated
circuits vulnerable to shorts that could result in an abnormal current
flow and increased heat that could damage the circuits. That, says
Toyota, could make front airbags and/or seat belt pretension devices
"inadvertently deploy."
The second recall involves the
front wipers on certain Lexus IS vehicles in which, Toyota says, the
wiper arm nut might not be tight enough. If the movement of the wipers
is restricted by a heavy load, such as a buildup of snow on the
windshield, one or both of the wipers could become inoperative.
Toyota will send letters telling owners of the affected cars to bring them to dealers for repairs.
