(KSDK) - Bob Costas ignited a Twitter firestorm Sunday night after using his half-time commentary to weigh in on the debate over the Washington Redskins' name.
"Think for a minute of the term Redskins, and how it differs from all the others," he said. "Ask yourself what the equivalent would be if directed toward African Americans, Hispanics, Asians or members of any other ethnic group," he said.
"When considered that way, Redskins can't possibly honor a heritage or noble character trait, nor can it possibly be considered a neutral item. It's an insult, a slur, no matter how benign the present-day intent."
The Redskins name has come under come under increased scrutiny as of late, prompting President Obama to say that if he owned the team, he'd consider a name change.
A graphic design firm even went as far as asking artists to submit new logos and names for the team.
