New York, New York (CBS News) -- Historic gains on Wall Street in 2013 means many people have seen a boost in their retirement accounts. But many are still hurting from the recession, and about two-thirds of Americans say they plan to delay their retirement plans.
Well, I'd have to say I'm probably one of the fortunate ones," says flight attendant Margaret Cullen who's happy that her 401k has bounced back since the recession.
Fidelity Investments, the largest provider of retirement mutual funds, says accounts at the end of last year nearly doubled in value from 2009.
The average 401k at Fidelity is now worth $89,000.
"Seventy-eight percent of the increase of those accounts last year came from markets. The stock market was up 30 percent -- 22 percent came from people who were putting more in their 401k," says CBS News Senior Business Analyst Jill Schlesinger.
Cullen says even with the boost in her retirement funds - she still doesn't feel comfortable leaving work yet.
"I thought I might retire at 55 and I'm now 56," says Cullen. "I love my job. I definitely know I'll be flying for the next 10 years."
She's not alone. Many Americans say they will have to work longer. In 2010, 42% of workers said they plan to delay retirement. That number jumped to 62% in 2012.
"Just because you want to work longer it doesn't mean you will be able to work longer. Some people have physical jobs they may not be able to do them as they get older," says Schlesinger.
Cullen plans to keep working and hopes her 401k continues to increase so she can hit her new retirement goal of 66 years old.
