NICU nurse makes costumes for tiny preemies

Halloween Feature - Costumes For New Born Babies

HICKORY, NC (WBTV) - It’s not something that’s listed in Katie Windsor’s job description.

As a charge nurse in the NICU at Catawba Valley Medical Center in Hickory, her job is to ensure the health and well-being of the tiny babies that are born too soon to go home.

“I feed them and give them meds and change diapers,” Katie lists as just a few of her job obligations. But on the side, the 10 year nurse does something she doesn’t have to just to make things a little easier for the parents.

“I’ve never had to go home and leave my baby. I just think it’s something I can do for the parents that are having to go home and leave half their heart here,” Katie said.

Katie spends her off-time making tiny little costumes. This year she crocheted capes adorned with Batman, Superman and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle emblems. The pictures will no doubt make you smile, as they do the parents of the little ones who wear them.

“They love them,” Katie said about the parent’s reactions, “There’s been some teary eyes and some laughs, and I think it’s served its purpose.”

Some of these children spend most of their time in a warming crib. They’re hooked up to wires and machines to help them thrive and grow.

For Logan Sauceda, it helps him imagine his son outside of as hospital setting, where he’s been for more than three months since he was born.

“I think it’s a pretty wonderful thing for them to do,” Logan said.

His son Fisher looked absolutely adorable as Batman with a cape and mask.

The pictures have been posted to the hospital’s Facebook page where it’s been shared almost 4,000 times.

It’s just a little something extra that Katie does to help parents cope. And to help bring smiles to a time that can be so trying.
