Pasco deputies: Man intentionally hits school volunteer with car

A driver intentionally hit a 79-year-old volunteer with his car this morning outside a school, the Pasco County Sheriff's Office said.

Lawrence Dean Franklin, 34, has been charged with aggravated battery with a vehicle on a person over 65 years old.

Deputies said Franklin was in the parent drop-off loop at Calusa Elementary School this this morning about 9:30 a.m. The volunteer, William Denamen, was assisting at the loop when Franklin refused to go into the proper lane.

Franklin refused to comply with the volunteer and took his foot off the brake off his 2006 Cadillac CTS when Denamen was standing in front of his vehicle, deputies said, to show the victim he was serious and had to leave.

The vehicle struck Denamen, causing minor injury to his leg, causing it to bleed, deputies said. Denamen also had a noticeable limp, but he refused medical treatment.

Franklin told deputies he "felt threatened" by Denamen when he told him to move into another lane.
