Pinellas deputies: Man crashed car, tried to say it was stolen

A driver crashed his car into a ditch, then tried to report the car was stolen, Pinellas County sheriff's deputies said.

According to an affidavit, Gerald Albertson, 68, 11417 65th Ave., crashed his car into a ditch Saturday night and walked away from the scene. A witness who saw Albertson walk away said he appeared to be intoxicated. The vehicle was impounded by the Florida Highway Patrol.

Sunday, Albertson called authorities to report the vehicle was stolen. After questioning and initially standing by the story the vehicle was stolen, deputies said he admitted he had been driving and crashed the vehicle.

He was charged with false report of a crime.
