Police take Special Olympic fundraising to a new level

St. Petersburg, Florida - People in St. Petersburg woke up Thursday morning with police activity at the Krispy Kreme Doughnut Shop on 4th Street.

But it was all for a good cause: the Special Olympics!

Authorities are asking for donations as people go through the drive-thru, then they hand out coupons for doughnuts. The more you give, the more you get.

This is the first year St. Petersburg Police have been able to do this at Krispy Kreme, but other law enforcement agencies have been partnered with Krispy Kreme for over a decade.

St. Petersburg Police Sgt. Edward Borrelli said, "It's not about cops and doughnuts, it's about awareness ... getting people to know what we are doing out here."

The fundraising will go on until 10:30 a.m. Thursday, and will happen again Friday and Saturday.

The Special Olympics will be held in May at Disney's Wide World of Sports.
