Florida lawmakers to consider mandatory recess

A Miami lawmaker has proposed a bill that would require the state's schools to hold 20 minutes of recess in kindergarten through fifth grade, a year after a similar bill died despite strong support from parents.

The bill, filed by Sen. Anitere Flores, R-Miami, mandates local school boards offer 20 minutes per day of "supervised, safe and unstructured free-play recess" for students in kindergarten through fifth grade.

Rep. Rene Plasencia, R-Orlando, led the fight for the proposal last year and will push it again in the House in the next legislative session, which starts March 7, 2017
