Women fear #MeToo movement could backfire at State Capitol

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Several male state legislators are refusing to meet with female staffers and lobbyists privately, according to a Tampa Bay Times report.

Some men and women at the Capitol are greeting each other with handshakes instead of hugs, which were once considered routine in Tallahassee.

The fear is legislators’ political enemies could turn sexual harassment claims into new political weapons.

State Sen. Jack Latvala, R-Clearwater, is under investigation amid the national #MeToo movement.

Latvala is accused by six women of inappropriately touching them without their consent. He’s taken a leave of absence as the Senate’s budget chair.
