PunditFact checks race connection to impeachment bid

St. Petersburg, Florida -- House Republicans plan to sue President Barack Obama by calling him "out of control" and accusing him of overstepping his executive authority when making changes to the Affordable Care Act.

10 News anchor Allison Kropff teams up with PunditFact to check a claim that those who want to impeach the president are of the same race, gender and party.

On Fox News Sunday, analyst Juan Williams accused Republicans of "demonizing" President Obama. Host Chris Wallace questioned Williams on whether he thought

Here's what he said during a heated exchange: "The people who want him impeached, they're all white, and they're all older, and guess what, they're all in the far right wing of the Republican Party."

So PunditFact looked into the numbers. Fact-checkers found three polls that asked about impeachment. They found that about one third of people asked if Obama should be impeached said yes.

"If you dig deeper into the numbers, you find Williams has a point. The support is substantially higher among white, conservative and in some cases older Americans. Two of the three polls found support was higher among the 65 and older set," says Katie Sanders with PunditFact.

A few political scientists also say Williams is correct, but he's going a little too far by saying "all," which overlooks support in other pockets.

So on balance, PunditFact rates Williams' claim, MOSTLY TRUE.
