Tallahassee, FL - Word that U.S. Senator Mel Martinez has resigned has politicos in Tallahassee buzzing.
While many people continue speculating who will be appointed to fill out Martinez's term, more questions than answers remain. Yes, Governor Charlie Crist could appoint himself, but he told the Associated Press today that he would not appoint himself.
Regardless, Florida's Democratic Party weighed in on the importance of picking a viable candidate who can step up, get involved, and keep that voice for Florida strong.
"I don't believe that the Governor is going to appoint somebody that's going to run against him in 2010. I mean, let's face it, he's invested a lot into this race already. Whoever his appointee will be will only be filling out this time," said Democratic Party Chair Karen Thurman. "We need somebody that is gonna go up there and that can grasp these issues that Floridians are gonna say, I need somebody that is paying attention, that understands my pain, knows what I'm going through, and helps solve these issues."
In his resignation, Martinez vowed to remain an active member of Florida's Republican Party but to what extent remains unknown.
