PunditFact: Claim about murder and black men

St. Petersburg, Florida -- As the family of Michael Brown says their final goodbyes, the national conversation about racial justice continues. But one pundit says there is one topic that is being ignored. 10 News anchor Allison Kropff teams up with PunditFact to check his claim.

On Fox News Sunday, Juan Williams talked about how civil rights activists and black leaders aren't addressing the real problem in Ferguson, Missouri: the high crime rate among the black community, particularly young black men.

Here's what he said:

"I think there's fear of intimidation, harassment being legitimized by the fact that there is a high rate of crime, especially among young black men. No. 1 cause of death, young black men 15 to 34 - murder. Who's committing the murder? Not police. Other black men."

PunditFact decided to check out the claim that murder is the number one cause of death. Fact-checkers looked at numbers from the CDC, which lists the leading causes of death from all demographics. They found murder is responsible for 40% of deaths between the age of 15 and 34.

"Experts say that a few different factors explain it -- they couldn't point to one thing. It's not just poverty, narcotics, that kind of thing -- it's a mix of how all these things interact," says Katie Sanders with PunditFact.

Fact-checkers also found this is a function of age.

"Young people, regardless of what color your skin is, are less likely to die from natural causes than people who are older, so that's part of it too," says Sanders.

Because CDC data supports what he said, PunditFact rates Williams' claim, TRUE.

For men of all ages, homicide was ranked fifth in leading causes of death for African Americans, seventh for Hispanics and ninth for American Indians. Homicide was not one of the top 15 causes of death for whites, 15-34.
