Lithia, Florida -- You may have noticed several billboards around the Bay area that show a woman hugging a boy with the website, 'SaveDevon.com.'
They are in digital billboards at several locations, including U.S. 19 at 38th Avenue. Here's the story behind it.
Devon Carver was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes as a toddler and has been suffering from complete kidney failure since 2010. Her first transplant that same year failed. Just last week, Carver had to get all her toes and parts of her feet amputated.
"It's like every time you think you've conquered something or you're somewhere where you need to be. Something else happens and you don't know what to do," said Carver.
This mother spends 12 hours each night on a dialysis machine. She's been waiting for another kidney now for about a year and a half.
"There's days when I wake up and say if it's not today, I don't want to wake up tomorrow, cause it gets so frustrating," said Carver.
It's also been hard on her family, especially her husband and 12-year-old son, David.
He has watched his mom suffer throughout the years.
"When kids say, oh my mom doesn't feel good, they don't know how it is when your mom is sick and in the bed every day," said David.
It's the hope that these billboards seen around the Bay area, which someone has paid for to help the family, will attract a donor and generate funds.
All the hospital stays, treatments, and equipment are pricey. Carver said $20,000 alone is needed for foot prosthetics.
"We need so much more than what we have. So much more than what we have. And we will take anything we can," said Carver.
Carver is already so grateful for all the community support throughout it all, whether it's food, encouragement, or fundraisers.
"My community has become my family and they are the best people that I've ever met," said Carver.
And that, along with her family, gives her hope.
Right now, Carver is on hold for a kidney match because of the recent foot surgery. She has to wait close to three months before even being considered again.
