Tampa, Florida -- Dogs and cats... they're like family. And many pet lovers feed their pets like they're family. That's why they buy quality pet foods, but a new recall has many animal lovers reeling.
"It's scary because our dogs are like family and something like that could potentially threaten their lives," said dog owner Jan Allan.
Procter and Gamble announced a voluntary recall of at least 29 types of Eukanuba and Iams dry dog and cat foods. Local pet stores that sell the two brands were notified immediately.
Animal House in St. Pete had only one bag of the food in question, and acted immediately to remove the product.

"We received an email and immediately came out to our shelves, removed the product, and filled out the necessary paperwork for our distributor," said Animal House manager Lori Jones.
The issue is a potential contamination with salmonella. The foods were only distributed in the United States and only represent one percent of all pet food produced by Procter and Gamble.
No salmonella-related illnesses have been reported, but here is the scary part. It's not just animals at risk, but also humans, by handling the contents of contaminated bags.
That danger came as another surprise to pet owners.
"I never even thought about that... washing your hands after handling the food. It never occurred to me," said Allan.
